What is Psychotherapy?
Think of our body, bones and flesh as hardware. Important physiological tools for survival.
Our thoughts, emotions, and feelings: these are our software. Our software controls our hardware, dictates our mood, and is responsible for our well-being. When functioning well, both software and hardware work in harmony to allow us to lead the lives we want to based on values and goals we set for ourselves.
But our software may not always work as well as you’d like it to. When we encounter significant situations or events that causes us distress or interferes with our ability to life a meaningful life, we might not always have the necessary tools to work through the issues. Or we might simply need the occasional tune up from time to time. This is psychotherapy.
Psychotherapy is understanding and dealing with your inner thoughts and emotions productively with your psychologist, in a completely honest environment.
Why would I see a psychologist?
Support from family and friends we trust is often our first line of defence. However, “talking” therapy with a psychologist involves so much more. Clinical psychologists undergo many years of education, supervised training and workplace experiences. This allows them to diagnose and treat psychological, intellectual, emotional, and behavioural maladjustment issues ranging from daily stressors to severe clinical psychopathology.
