Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease [fun fact: peri (around / dontal (tooth)], is an oral health condition that affects the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth, mainly the gums and bone. It is primarily caused by bacterial growth and infection in the gums, and is one of the most common diseases in the world.

LSC Eye

Cataract surgery and Laser vision correction are two of the most commonly performed surgeries worldwide. Cataract surgery addresses the opacification of the natural crystalline lens in our eye, which commonly occurs due to aging. Laser vision correction, often represented by LASIK (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), on the other hand, treats imperfect refractive errors such as myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. As cataracts and refractive errors are very common problems affecting our eyes, their management commonly “cross paths”.

Dr Chang Fu-Gui shares on no-prep veneers, an alternative to traditional veneers, which minimize the need to grind away tooth enamel. They offer advantages such as less tooth sensitivity, easier placement, and potentially lower cost. However, they may have limitations in masking dark tooth shades or altering tooth shape, and they can be prone to chipping due to the thinner veneering material.

In this article, Dr Lynette Ng shares about the role of Dentures in Modern Dentistry. Dentures and implants are both restorative options for replacing missing teeth, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Dentures are removable devices that can replace missing teeth and provide support to facial muscles, but they can be less convenient and require proper oral hygiene. Implants, on the other hand, offer a more permanent solution that closely resembles real teeth, but they require a surgical procedure, can be more expensive, and may have aesthetic limitations.

Menopause brings about changes in the body, including a decline in estrogen levels that can impact oral health. Reduced saliva secretion may lead to dry mouth, taste alterations, and mouth soreness, increasing the risk of dental decay and periodontal disease. Dr Tan Wah Ching shares about how good oral hygiene, hydration, a healthy diet, stress management, and regular dental checkups are crucial for maintaining optimal oral health during menopause.
